A team of Lafayette College psychology researchers took a closer look at young children and video interactions and made some surprising discoveries about what kids aged 1- to 2-years-old do and don't get out of FaceTime interactions on a screen.
Professor Lauren J. Myers, Ph. Many families with young children use video chat to connect with family and friends--but what do children understand about the on-screen people and content of these interactions? The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages screen time for kids under 2 years because children who watch a lot of media often have poor language skills, and they miss out on other activities that would be more developmentally appropriate.
However, there may be a difference between putting a baby in front of a television and having an interactive exchange via video chat. Myers and her Lafayette students, Rachel B. LeWitt, Renee E. Gallo and Nicole M. Maselli, sought to find new answers to questions about why children under 2 years old seem to learn better in person than from video. The researchers evaluated 1- to 2-year-old children's learning from video chat by manipulating social contingency: 60 children experienced one week of either real-time FaceTime conversations or pre-recorded videos 30 in each group as the partner taught novel words, actions and patterns.
The researchers found that children paid attention and responded to their on-screen partners, but only children who experienced interactive video chat responded in sync with the partner, such as clapping to imitate after the partner had clapped. After one week of video chatting, children in the FaceTime live condition learned social information -- that is, they preferred and recognized someone they had previously only 'met' via video-chat -- and cognitive information, learning new words and patterns.
Learning occurred from video chat only when children talked to an on-screen "partner" who responded to them in real time, and learning did not occur when the partner was pre-recorded and couldn't actually see or hear the child. Myers says they found that video chat makes learning possible for children under 2 years old because it mimics in-person interaction -- when it created a situation in which the on-screen person can respond to the child accurately in a back-and-forth conversation.
According to the Lafayette study, starting at about 17 months, children begin to get something out of live video interaction with real people and are able to apply the interaction to people--like Grandma and other people they know--with whom they have a relationship in real life. While Myers says it's clear that these video chat interactions represent a form of quality time, she notes that the same does not hold true to video interactions designed to seem "real" but are not.

Discover how this powerful combination of hardware and software allow you to create intuitive spatial interactions based on the relative position of two or more devices. We'll walk you through this session-based API and show you how to deliver entirely new interactive experiences — all with privacy in mind. Hello and welcome to the session "Meet Nearby Interaction. Today we will talk about how to build a completely new class of user interactions that are based on spatial awareness in iOS.
Spatial awareness, in essence, means understanding the physical world around you. Such understanding in a device you're holding in your hand can translate into fluid interactions with the environment.Revoir conjugaison imparfait
The top selection that I'm highlighting here uses spatial sensing technologies available for the first time in the iPhone The user can orient their device toward someone else's device to give a strong hint to the share sheet for presenting the most relevant sharing selection. This sort of high-fidelity interactivity is only possible thanks to the Apple-designed U1 chip. We wanted to empower you to use such capabilities in your application. So today, we are introducing the Nearby Interaction framework, a powerful yet easy-to-use interface to spatial awareness in iOS.
Let's start by talking about user control and transparency. Say your app wants to run a Nearby Interaction session with another user's device. The first thing the system will do is present a permission prompt to both users.
What is Video Interaction Guidance?
The user can choose between not allowing your app to interact with a nearby device, or granting it a one-time permission that remains in effect until your app is exited.
If users on both sides choose to grant permission, their devices can start to understand how far apart they are and in which relative direction. This kind of rich spatial information enables you to create user experiences that are more natural and more intuitive in your application. Nearby Interaction will be available to your apps on U1-equipped devices running iOS I will talk about spatial awareness in iOS with Nearby Interaction.
Then I will take you through what it takes to start streaming relative position updates. And I'll close with some best practices for you to adopt in your application. So let's jump right in. Nearby Interaction provides your app two main types of output: a measurement of distance between devices, and a measurement of relative direction from one to the other.
So when your app is running a Nearby Interaction session, it is able to get a continuous stream of updates containing distance and direction information. As this slide shows, these updates are bi-directional, and both sides of the session are learning about each other's relative position simultaneously. Your app is not limited to interacting with just one device. Each device can run several sessions at the same time, each session with one other peer.
In this graphic, I'm showing four devices interacting with one another by each running three sessions in parallel. Let's talk about the interface for making this happen.
